Five stories – Five Lives

Have you ever felt confused or at a loss for words in front of a spouse, colleague or parent, to the extent that you have felt inadequate or, worse, a failure? Do you ever wonder why someone close to you seems to endure humiliation without resistance?

Manipulators are everywhere. At first these devious and calculating people can be hard to spot, because that is their way. They are often masters of disguise: witty, disarming, even charming in public – tricks to snare their prey – but then they revert to their true self of being controlling and angry in private. Their main aim: to dominate and use others to satisfy their needs, with a complete lack of compassion and empathy for their victim.

In this collection of short novellas, you meet people like you and me, intent on living happy lives, yet each of them, in one way or another, is caught up and damaged by a manipulative individual. First you meet Tess, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision, then young, successful and well balanced Sophie, who is drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled father. Next, there is teenage Holly, who is intent on making a better life for herself, followed by a manipulator himself, trying to make sense of his irreversible incarceration. Lastly, there is Lisa, who has to face a parent’s biggest regret. All stories highlight to what extent abusive manipulation can distort lives and threaten our very feeling of self-worth.

I’ve been trying to get into novellas a bit more, I seem to read many series but not their novellas. When I came across this blog tour e-mail I was 100% interested. I love that this tells stories of people who came across manipulative people. I’m a very naive person and just beginning to see certain people for who and what they are, manipulators. I thought each of these stories really showed people’s lack of empathy for others in a very easy to understand way, you can tell a ton of research went into each of them. I personally love reading books by author’s that are passionate about the topic they are writing about, and let me tell you this author is as passionate as they get.

Each of the five stories really dragged me in, in a different and unique way. I’m very glad I stepped out of my comfort zone yet again (one of my 2018 goals), because I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the psychology behind manipulators. The Five Stories are as follows: Tess and Tattoos, The Spell, Runaway Girl, The Narcissist, and The Perfect Child. I realized how different each of these were while still giving me a wonderful idea of manipulation. Sadly I feel like we can all relate to at least one of these novellas, but it is nice to know we aren’t alone.

I can’t recommend this book enough, whether you want to read a novella a night, or the whole book in one go, you are bound to enjoy it. If you want to learn more about manipulation and manipulative people in general this would be a great place to start, or even continue. I don’t think I could point you toward only one of these novellas because they were all so unique and though provoking.
