GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:
“A fresh new fantasy of an enchanting world.” – Wendy Orr, author of Nim’s Island and Dragonfly Song.
When fifteen-year-old Esme Silver objects at her father’s wedding, her protest is dismissed as the action of a stubborn, selfish teenager. Everyone else has accepted the loss of Esme’s mother, Ariane – so why can’t she?
But Esme is suspicious. She is sure that others are covering up the real reason for her mother’s disappearance – that ‘lost at sea’ is code for something more terrible, something she has a right to know.
After Esme is accidentally swept into the enchanted world of Aeolia, the truth begins to unfold. With her newfound friends, Daniel and Lillian, Esme retraces her mother’s steps in the glittering canal city of Esperance, untangling the threads of Ariane’s double life. But the more Esme discovers about her mother, the more she questions whether she really knew her at all.
This fresh, inventive tale is an ideal read for younger teens.
MY THOUGHTS:
When I was contacted by the author asking if I would like to review her book which included dragons, I immediately jumped at the chance. I really like fantasy books that include dragons! I’m so happy this one lived up to my expectations, the world-building was amazing. I loved the attention to detail that was included. There was a lot of Greek Mythology thrown in as well, which was a huge plus in my opinion.
I though Esme was a great character, she was very determined to prove that there was more to her mother being lost at sea. She was a wonderful friend who had great friends who would do anything to prove it. For being so young I felt she handled most of the things thrown at her in a way that is admirable, especially for young teens reading this one.
This book contained everything I like in a solid fantasy novel. There was mystery, dragons, magic, friendship, mermaid-ish characters and was so imaginative. It was a very well-written book and I can’t wait to see what happens to Esme in the next installment. I would definitely recommend this one to younger teens and middle grade readers, who need a great look at what a fantasy novel should be. A quick side-note that the cover is incredible!!
Ooo I love dragons too – I will have to have a read 😀

This fantasy is in my April TBR and while I was already pretty excited about this, your review has made me all the more excited. Dragons and mythology are two of my favourite aspects of a fantasy too and this one sounds like it’s going to impress me a lot. Lovely review! 😀

I’m always a bit sceptical of fantasy as some of it just doesn’t sit well with me. I like the idea of her mother’s suspicious disappearance but the rest could be touch and go.

Fantasy definitely isn’t one of those genres for everyone, I love how there was the added mystery in for sure.
