MY GOODREADS RATING 4.5/5 STARS
(Thanks to Edelweiss & Blazer + Bray, I received an eARC)
It is a companion novel to Dumplin’, which follows supporting characters from the first book in the months after Willowdean’s star turn in the Clover City pageant.
Millie Michalchuk has gone to fat camp every year since she was a girl. Not this year. This year she has new plans to chase her secret dream—and to kiss her crush. Callie Reyes is the pretty girl who is next in line for dance team captain and has the popular boyfriend. But when it comes to other girls, she’s more frenemy than friend. When circumstances bring the girls together over the course of a semester, they will surprise everyone (especially themselves) by realizing they might have more in common than they ever imagined.
I absolutely adored Dumplin’ by this author, so I just had to request this one. I was not disappointed in the least with this one, I may have even enjoyed it more than Dumplin’. Honestly I think it was because this one was told in two points of view, so you got a good look at two completely different characters who may not be as different as they think. I loved how the story lines crossed and flowed perfectly.
Millie was one of my favorite characters in Dumplin’ so I was so excited to hear we would get a book with her point of view! She was just a sweet, charming character who I couldn’t get enough of. She knew there was more out there than her mother thought and she was willing to do everything in her power to be happy. Callie annoyed the crap out of me a good two thirds of this one, but of course she changed my mind eventually, which I was expecting.
Overall, I loved this book! I definitely could see being able to read it without reading the companion novel first, but I would recommend reading it too. I loved how each characters story really came to life on the pages. Julie Murphy is an amazing story teller and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
